Nanyang Education Award 2013

John Yeo is the founder of EdImpact Pte Ltd. Set up to work with companies, schools and different organisations, he brought along a team of passionate individuals who stands by Edimpact's mission: Edifying People, Designing Impact.  

 

He previously served as the Deputy Principal of Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) International Academy. With his expertise in curriculum design, he created and spearheaded signature programmes such as STEM (i.e. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Enterprise Education.

JOhn was the 2017 recipient of the U.S. Ruth B. Noller Research Grant Awardee for his work on Scientific Problem Finding in Creative Inquiry. This annual award given by the U.S. Creative Education Foundation supports emerging, paradigm-shifting research with high potential for impact in the field of creativity.

He previously held the position of Assistant Head for Professional Development in the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group in the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University. Singapore. He taught the Masters level modules as well as Management and Leadership Studies. He also specialises in creative and critical thinking, problem finding, curriculum design, teachers’ professional learning, as well as authentic assessment. He has written and co-edited books such as Mastering the Art of Authentic Assessment, Sustainable School Reform through Lesson Study for Learning Community and other publications. Besides conducting in-service training for teachers, he also engages school and community leaders with dialogue on educational issues such as curriculum innovation and designing for 21st century teaching and learning.

 

Recognised for his work in creativity and lesson study, he has been invited to speak in China, India, Japan, Philippines, Russia and United States since 2009. He was on several committees that championed national curriculum reviews when he was serving in the Curriculum Planning and Development Division in the Ministry of Education (MOE, Singapore). Some of the committees included Curriculum 2015, Project Work, Social Studies Syllabus Development Committee and other inter-agency planning teams such as Future Schools Project, Interactive Digital Media Taskforce  and Innolab. For his efforts to inspire and build capacity in creativity and innovation within MOE, he received the Public Service Outstanding Activist Award 2009.

 

In his term in NIE, he was also invited to be on MOE's Critical and Inventive Thinking Taskforce that proposed new curriculum directions for all schools. He was also appointed as the lead curriculum consultant for the review of MOE Innovation Programme under the Gifted Education Branch. In 2013, he received the Excellence in Teaching, Nanyang Education Award.
