David Kwek
Senior Specialist, Gifted Education at Ministry of Education
Since 2010, John Yeo has been conducting Creative Problem Solving (CPS) workshops for new teachers in the Innovation Programme (IvP) offered by the Gifted Education Branch. This year, the Branch engaged him as our consultant to review the innovation process adopted in the programme. During the course of this project, I came to appreciate him as a knowledgeable other, skilful facilitator and visionary who always challenged the project team to push the boundaries and explore new possibilities to advance the potential of our programme. By the end of this partnership, we were able to glean important insights, implement new strategies and, more importantly, the professional capacity of my team was significantly increased.
As a thought leader in CPS and curriculum design, John is not only passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills, but he actively- and successfully- engages others as partners and collaborators in probing current situations and analysing ideas and practices for breakthrough understandings. His approach is refreshing because he is very relational and leverages upon everyone in the team as a valuable resource for learning and discovery. It is this process that builds confidence and deepens commitment of the team to devote to the project not as a task, but as a cause with goals worth pursuing.

Head/ English Department, Anderson Junior College
John is a passionate educator of teacher leaders who inspires with his innovative views on curriculum. His course on Creative Problem Solving at the Management and Leadership in Schools Programme at the National Institute of Education (NIE) which I attended in Sep 2012 is a popular course that is often over-subscribed due to John’s ability to get participants to think differently and to examine critical issues about teaching for creativity. The course takes teacher leaders on a process of self-discovery and challenges existing mindsets about solving curriculum problems through thought-provoking, intensive and riveting sessions which often draws out the best from the participants. John also consistently challenges teacher leaders to rethink their pedagogies and consider how creativity can be a systemic agenda for Teaching and Learning.
John is also an influential thought leader who regularly engages school leaders and teacher leaders on educational issues on Facebook. He makes effective use of the social media to direct his friends to an eclectic mix of sources on diverse areas such as approaches to curriculum design, philosophy in education and vision for the future of education. His posts are often a platform that brings educators from different schools together for productive dialogue. Many of these educators may not even know each other in real life but nevertheless engage in deep conversations about education often exceeding even the quality of those found in face-to-face interactions. John’s posts are also an avenue for crowdsourcing and he makes it a point to aggregate the views expressed and draw lessons from what was shared.
Ang Yuan Peng
Head/ Science Department, Serangoon Junior College
John had previously been invited to speak at the Serangoon Junior College Mathematics Department Retreat in 2012 on teaching for creativity in Mathematics, and he was subsequently introduced to me by Mr Kan Kok Leong, HOD/Math in SRJC, who had studied under one of the modules as part of the NIE Master of Education (Curriculum and Teaching) Course under John’s tutelage. Knowing that John is trained in Science, he was also recommended to me by my former Deputy Principal, Ms Sharon Yeo. Thereafter, I have been working with him since 2013 whereby he has been advising the Science Department on the design and implementation of Lesson Study within the Science Curriculum. Through my interactions with him, I find him as a man who is deeply passionate in Science Curriculum, and is highly responsible in nurturing Science educators.
As a lecturer in Science curriculum and teachers’ professional learning, his passions stood out clearly whenever he interacts with the teachers and myself. He would go the extra mile for all of us. In order to customize his delivery to better suit the teachers’ profile and learning outcomes, he came down to SRJC and worked with me and my KPs on our focus areas that will enhance the teachers’ professional learning needs. The areas include teaching for scientific enquiry through questioning and the conduct of Flipped Lessons for Science. In addition, he also engaged me in professional dialogues on how to deal with the changes and uncertainties that Science Teachers need to face with the upcoming new A-level Science Curriculum. .... .... In one of the classes that he conducted, he challenged the teachers to break out of their mental barriers and embraced scientific inquiry, for he believes that 21st century Science students need to be exposed to the uncertainties that surround Science. Thus, he views that the acquiring of the critical and creative mind in Science is crucial in the learning of Science Education among Singapore students.
